Common Dental Issues Found in Cats

Healthy Mouths For Happy Cats

Cats are experts at hiding discomfort, which is why dental issues often go unnoticed until they become serious. Oral health is a key part of your cat’s overall well-being—problems like gum disease or tooth decay can lead to pain, infection, and even organ damage if left untreated. Recognizing the signs early and getting professional care can make a world of difference in your cat’s quality of life. At The Ark Animal Clinic in Dubai, we’re here to help you stay ahead of common feline dental problems.

Here’s what every cat owner should know about spotting, preventing, and treating dental disease in cats.

What Are the Most Common Dental Problems in Cats?

Cats can develop a range of dental issues, most of which begin with the buildup of plaque and tartar. Without regular cleaning, bacteria can cause inflammation, decay, and pain. Here are the most common conditions we see:

Periodontal Disease: The most prevalent dental issue in cats, periodontal disease, is an infection of the gums and surrounding structures. It starts with gingivitis (inflammation of the gums) and can progress to tooth loss and bone damage. Signs include bad breath, red or bleeding gums, and difficulty eating.

Tooth Resorption: This painful condition causes the structure of a tooth to break down and dissolve over time. Affected cats may drool, paw at their mouth, or resist being touched near the jaw. Tooth resorption often requires extraction and is best diagnosed through dental X-rays.

Stomatitis: Feline stomatitis is a severe, painful inflammation of the entire mouth. It can make eating difficult and is often linked to immune system issues or viral infections. Symptoms include excessive drooling, weight loss, and visible mouth ulcers.

Broken or Fractured Teeth: Trauma or chewing hard objects can lead to broken teeth, which may expose sensitive nerves or cause infection. These often go unnoticed until the cat shows signs of discomfort or swelling.

Keeping Your Cat’s Teeth Healthy with The Ark

Preventive dental care is essential to avoid these painful conditions. At The Ark Animal Clinic, we recommend annual dental check-ups and cleanings, especially for older cats or those with known dental issues. If your cat exhibits signs such as foul breath, drooling, reduced appetite, or pawing at the mouth, please schedule a visit promptly.

We use safe, cat-friendly dental procedures, including scaling, polishing, and digital X-rays, to assess and treat dental problems early. Our team also guides at-home care, including dental diets, special treats, and brushing techniques that work for your feline friend.
